ASSE Metropolitan Chapter Strategic Three-Year Plan - 2007-2010

The vision of the Metropolitan Chapter of the ASSE is to be the premier organization and resource for those engaged in the practice of protection of people, property and the environment, and to lead the profession in the Greater New York area.

Goal 1: To prepare a stable chapter that can provide a service to our members and potential members by recognizing their needs and responding to those needs appropriately.

Objective 1: Chapter Leadership and Direction

  • Develop and conduct a training and succession plan for those wanting to become chapter officers.

Objective 2: Chapter Stability and Growth

  • Increase membership.
  • Enhance the financial resources of the chapter.
  • Establish a sectional format that meets the various needs or our members.
  • Recruit lapsed members by generating new interest in the ASSE.
  • Participate in membership drives targeted at other professional groups (RIMs, Nurses, Safety Council, AIHA, etc.).
  • Fundraising and corporate donation programs.
  • Budgeting process implemented and updated quarterly.
  • Implement and maintain financial controls to track income due from advertising, sponsorship and dues.
  • Establish and monitor financial controls for event income and expense projections.
  • Recruit new student sections.
  • Ensure that students are aware of scholarship opportunities.
  • Continue contact with student sections to convert graduates to professional member status.

Goal 2: Provide a network of professional support for our members.

Maintaining professional competence through continued member education; building a network of professional contacts for our members; and encouraging the continued advancement of the careers of our members will accomplish this.

Objective 1: Certification

  • Increase support for our members seeking professional certification via workshops, study aids and support groups.

Objective 2: Technical Education

  • Establish programs that meet members needs; offer CEUs; encompasses the geographic area of the chapter and the various segments of the economy that employ our members.
  • Review the possibility of adding a second program chair, with one handling seminars and the PDC, and the other handling monthly technical meetings.
  • Offer a preparatory CSP or ASP class at least annually.
  • Review the need for additional classes including workshops, study aids and support groups.
  • Provide joint meetings with fellow EHS organizations to maximize meeting interest and participation.

Additional Objectives:

  • Formalize meetings to include agenda, guest speakers, and announcements.
  • Minimum of one group tour annually
  • Improve member and potential member notifications/communication.
  • Constant improvement and update of website.

Goal 3: To develop and implement programs that continues the Metropolitan Chapter as the Premier Chapter recognized on a National, Regional, and Local level.

Objective 1: Establish a National Chapter Presence

  • Continue Regional/Area/Chapter efforts to host an upcoming Professional Development Conference (PDC), as well as other National/Regional safety and health events to be held in the Chapter’s geographic area.
  • Submit, at a minimum, one name for Society awards and honors each year.

Objective 2: Coordinate with Society to kick-off/ play a pivotal role in 2008, 2009, 2010 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week.

  • Establish committee that could liason with United Nations and NY based national morning television to kick off and promote NAOSH Week including display of Child Poster Contest

Objective 3: Chapter Recognition

  • Outreach programs to state/local governments and business communities that meet a local/regional need and enhance the chapter’s reputation and recognition.
  • Become more active in local causes and activities (i.e., Earth Day, Clean-up Activities, working with local agencies such as Fire and Police and other public agencies, etc.)
